The Monday Signal — No. 006
THE MONDAY SIGNAL · by RC Empire No. 006 · August 10, 2026 Curated picks for the week — read, listen, watch.
The Machine Is the Customer
Amazon, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and Shopify all shipped agent-driven checkout inside eighteen months, and Gartner now puts 90% of B2B purchasing — more than $15 trillion — through agent exchanges by 2028. Meanwhile the feed is drowning in machine-made content and your team is quietly babysitting the bots. Fourteen picks on what to do when the buyer, the feed, and the co-worker are all algorithms.
01 · Branding
Your next customer may never see your website. Build the brand the agent reads — and the culture that makes it true.
Algorithmic Shopping Is Here. Is Your Company Ready? — Harvard Business Review · The timeline is brutal: Amazon's "Buy for Me" (April 2025), OpenAI's Instant Checkout (September), Google's Universal Commerce Protocol at NRF (January 2026), Microsoft Copilot Checkout the same week, and Shopify flipping on agent-readable storefronts by default across millions of merchants. Gartner projects 90% of B2B purchases — $15T+ — flowing through agent exchanges by 2028. You've spent years preparing to use AI. The harder job is preparing for AI as the customer. (Read)
How to Recognize When Your Customers Want You to Act — Harvard Business Review · Listening systems have gotten good at capturing what customers want and how they feel. They still miss the third signal — when customers expect you to do something. That gap is where trust quietly leaks out, one unanswered expectation at a time. (Read)
The New Fundamentals of Brand Strategy for Modern Social Media — Social Media Today · Brand social has stopped being a campaign calendar and started behaving like programming — recurring formats, hosts, and shows rather than one-off posts. The mindset shift matters more than the tactic: you're not filling a grid, you're running a channel. (Read)
Why Great Turnarounds Start with Culture, Not Strategy — HBR IdeaCast, with Dan Schulman · The Verizon CEO on why he led with culture instead of strategy: 13,000 layoffs in month two to fund a customer war chest, an internal mandate called "every customer has a name," and 650,000 net subscriber adds in the first quarter. Best line for operators — "when the pace of change external to a company is faster than the change of pace internal, you're falling behind." (Listen)
02 · Social Media Marketing
The platforms are simultaneously shipping AI tools and building buttons to report the results. That contradiction is this week's whole story.
Can the Apps Stop AI Slop? — Social Media Today · Every major platform is pushing generative tools while scrambling to filter what those tools produce. LinkedIn shipped a "report AI slop" option; Snapchat says it will stop recommending it outright. Read this as a distribution warning: the algorithmic penalty for machine-made content is arriving before the labeling standard does. (Read)
The 2026 Social Media Content Strategy Report — Sprout Social · 2,300+ consumers and 1,200+ marketers, and the headline finding is the counter-programming: consumers rank human-generated content as the #1 thing brands should prioritize. Use AI for audience insight and process, not taste. The full data set is worth the download. (Read)
TikTok Partners with Disney — Social Media Today · A first-of-its-kind global licensing deal lets creators use Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars characters in their own videos. Owned IP just became a distribution asset you can rent out — worth watching if you've been sitting on characters, mascots, or formats you've never licensed. (Read)
Instagram Shares Tips on Video Creation — Social Media Today · Meta's own guidance on making short video that holds in the Edits app. Unglamorous, specific, and free — the kind of thing worth handing your editor rather than reading yourself. (Read)
03 · Self-Help & Personal Development
If the machine can do the task, the only thing left to develop is the judgment that decides which tasks matter.
Don't Let AI Flatten Your Leadership Style — Harvard Business Review · Opens with a CEO reviewing an AI-drafted town hall speech that was coherent, on-strategy, and completely wrong — it stitched together reassurances she'd already given instead of meeting the moment. Lancefield's fix is a four-mode spectrum for deciding, task by task, what stays leader-owned. The risk isn't AI doing your work. It's AI averaging your voice. (Read)
Essentials: Control Your Brain Chemistry for Focus, Motivation & Well-Being — Huberman Lab · The Essentials format is the compressed version — how dopamine, epinephrine and serotonin actually shape energy and focus across a day, and the levers you control. Thirty minutes, protocol-dense, no filler. (Listen)
Essentials: How to Become Resilient, Forge Your Identity & Lead Others — Huberman Lab, with Jocko Willink · Willink's argument is that identity is built by repetition, not decided by declaration — and that the leader's job is to hand away ownership, not hoard it. Pair it with the HBR piece above: same problem, one from the neuroscience side, one from the org chart. (Watch)
Michael Saylor: "Don't Try to Outwork the Robots" — Fortune · From his Diary of a CEO appearance this week: Saylor says a novel financial product designed with ChatGPT's help raised roughly $15 billion for Strategy. His rule is blunt — don't compete with automation on repetition, use it to build products that didn't previously exist. Take the principle, hold the crypto at arm's length. (Read)
04 · The AI Brief
Where the frontier stands, and two picks on the hidden cost and the real payoff.
Where the top models stand — week of August 10, 2026: Anthropic holds the top two slots. Claude Opus 5 leads the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index at roughly 61, with Claude Fable 5 just behind near 60 and GPT-5.6 Sol third around 59 — close enough that third-party indices disagree on the order. Gemini 3.5 Pro still has not shipped publicly. Google released three Flash models on July 21 and confirmed Pro is testing with partners, with no date; reports of an imminent launch have been circulating, so treat any "it's out" claim as unconfirmed until Google says so. And open weights are now genuinely at the frontier — Moonshot's Kimi K3 sits inside the top handful overall. Practical read: stop optimizing your stack around one vendor.
How Much Time Do Your Employees Spend Botsitting? — Harvard Business Review · "Botsitting" — the unmeasured labor of supplying context, checking outputs, and correcting errors so the AI is actually useful. The opening case is a consultant who bought a scheduling agent and got a second job managing it. If your AI ROI math doesn't have a line for this, your ROI math is wrong. (Read)
How AI Is Rewriting the Content Activation Playbook — Marketing AI Institute · The repeatable-machine version of repurposing: one substantial asset in, a structured editorial system out, distributed across platforms without a human rewriting each variant from scratch. This is the highest-leverage AI workflow for a small team — the one worth building before anything fancier. (Listen)
