Taste Is the Last Moat

Instagram changed its wordmark for the first time in a decade and drew 5,000 complaints. Adobe surveyed 850 owners and found 56% believe that once everyone holds the same tools, the edge belongs to whoever has the best taste. Thirteen picks on the one advantage you can't download.

01 Β· Branding

When the tools are free and identical, judgment is the product.

Instagram reveals its new logo β€” Social Media Today Β· Adam Mosseri called the decade-old wordmark "dated" and promised a refresh that is "sharper and more modern" β€” and got 5,000+ combined replies on Threads and Instagram, many complaining the stylized "r" reads as a "z." A useful live case study in the gap between a considered rebrand and the audience's first three seconds. Also: time to refresh those icons on your own site. (Read)

Adobe says brands need a point of view to stand out β€” Social Media Today Β· 850 small business owners surveyed: 79% say a clear point of view "isn't just good branding, it's what makes people follow them," and 56% say that when everyone has the same tools the edge goes to whoever has the best taste. The tell is the other number β€” 63% admit they second-guess their own creative calls. Conviction, not capability, is the bottleneck. (Read)

Why Three is returning to its youthful roots post-merger β€” Marketing Week Β· After the Vodafone–Three merger, chief brand officer Maria Koutsoudakis audited every past campaign to find where the brand still had real equity, then deliberately ceded the family market to Vodafone and rebuilt around 16–29s. The line worth stealing: marketers kill platforms far too early, when "the second time, even the third time, something is even more successful when it comes to return." (Read)

The Innovation Strategy Most Companies Miss β€” HBR IdeaCast, with Vijay Govindarajan & Amos Winter Β· Design for your hardest constraint first β€” affordability, portability, no infrastructure β€” and you tend to end up with a product that performs better everywhere else too. The brand version of the same argument: build for the customer with the least patience and the least budget, and the premium tier takes care of itself. (Listen)

02 Β· Social Media Marketing

Every major platform spent this week raising the price of a distribution slot.

YouTube announces changes to creator monetization β€” Social Media Today Β· From February 1, 2027, the Partner Program bar doubles: 8,000 watch hours in 365 days (up from 4,000) or 20M Shorts views in 90 days (up from 10M). Existing members are grandfathered in. The offsetting upside is real β€” when an advertiser targets five or fewer channels, the creator takes 45% of that ad's revenue on top of Shorts pool payouts. Narrow beats broad. (Read)

X updates creator revenue share parameters β€” Social Media Today Β· The renamed Original Creator Rewards Program pays for original reporting, threads, your own photo and video, and commentary that "materially and meaningfully transforms" a source β€” and explicitly disqualifies anything made "using automated means." Read the disqualification list carefully before your team ships another AI-assisted post: X hasn't yet said whether generated images count. (Read)

Study highlights Reddit's influence on purchase decisions β€” Social Media Today Β· Reddit surveyed roughly 14,000 U.S. and 6,500 U.K. shoppers: half of U.S. respondents now go to Reddit to verify what an AI chatbot recommended, and more than 1 in 5 append "reddit" to searches on purpose. They reported trusting Reddit for that verification more than family or friends. If your category has an active subreddit, that thread is now part of your funnel. (Read)

LinkedIn playbook offers guide to optimizing for AI β€” Social Media Today Β· LinkedIn's own guide to getting cited by AI chatbots, built on what it calls the Credibility Stack: company presence first, then employee profiles and creators. The practical mechanic is that native long-form articles get picked up far better than feed posts. The caution is equally practical β€” run the same playbook on property you actually own. (Read)

03 Β· Self-Help & Personal Development

Taste is judgment, and judgment is the first thing pressure takes from you.

6 Ways Leaders Harness Stress β€” Harvard Business Review Β· Leaders now report stress levels above the peak of the pandemic, and while a short spike sharpens performance, sustained pressure narrows perspective and quietly degrades judgment. Miller and Keller map six default archetypes β€” lighthouse, alchemist, firefighter, stoic, diplomat, container β€” each with a strength that stress inflates into a blind spot. Find your default, then widen the range. (Read)

Discipline Is the Wrong Word for High-Performers β€” SUCCESS Β· The argument: consistent performers aren't drawing on a deeper willpower reservoir, they're spending less because their internal resistance is lower. Ferry leans on Baumeister's ego-depletion work to reframe the whole thing. The actionable bit is unusually good β€” when you abandon a habit, log the repeating exit point rather than buying another system. (Read)

Using AI to Increase Your Intelligence & Enrich Humanity β€” Huberman Lab, with Dr. Fei-Fei Li Β· The person who built ImageNet on how to use these systems to become sharper rather than more dependent on them. Pair it with the SUCCESS piece above: one is about reducing friction in your habits, this one is about not outsourcing the part of your thinking that's actually you. (Watch)

04 Β· The AI Brief

Where the frontier stands, and two picks on what the machines are doing to the feed.

Where the top models stand β€” week of August 17, 2026: Anthropic still holds the top two slots on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, with Claude Opus 5 around 63 and Claude Fable 5 just behind near 62. Third place has shifted since last issue β€” Grok 4.6 now sits near 61, roughly where GPT-5.6 Sol had been, and the two trade places depending on whose index you read. Gemini 3.5 Pro still has not shipped publicly, though Gemini 3.1 Pro continues to lead several reasoning benchmarks. Practical read: the ranking is close enough that it should not be driving your architecture. Pick for the task, not the leaderboard.

LinkedIn Is Policing AI Slop, So Time to Reset β€” Marketing AI Institute Β· LinkedIn added a "Seems like AI slop" flag and, in the same breath, downgraded its own writing assistant to a proofreader. Flagged authors get privately told that members found the post inauthentic, and LinkedIn says that signal will shape ranking over time. Kaput's reset is the right one: demote AI from author to editor, and build a voice document to feed it as context. (Read)

Zuckerberg releases AI manifesto β€” Social Media Today Β· A 6,500-word essay promising everyone a personal agent working "24/7 on your behalf" across health, career and finances β€” published alongside a roughly $1 trillion infrastructure push and an argument against slowing American model releases. Worth reading for the vision and for the friction: the same company cut 20% of its staff this year while arguing AI isn't about replacing labor. (Read)
