Access Is Not Adoption

OpenAI's own study found 98% of its employees use Codex — against 17% of the companies paying for it. Meta wrote an $18bn cheque to settle how teens use its apps. The gap between having the thing and actually using it is where this week's thirteen picks live.

01 · Branding

Distinctiveness is cheap to describe and expensive to actually own.

A mandate to reclaim iconicity: Inside the new £4m Hovis campaign — Marketing Week · Hovis is putting £4m behind "shoring up the core" of the brand under new ownership, in a category that is shrinking. The instructive part is the sequencing — new owners funding brand before line extensions, which is the opposite of the usual playbook. (Read)

Under half of brands boast 'well-defined' effectiveness function — Marketing Week · From the Language of Effectiveness 2026 research: fewer than half of brands have a properly defined effectiveness function, and marketers increasingly call effectiveness "everyone's responsibility." Which, in practice, is usually nobody's. (Read)

How one B2B firm 'injected humanity' into its brand — Marketing Week · Roland DG surveyed roughly 18,000 people and found its strengths were trust, reliability and quality — the exact three every competitor also claims. Its answer was a new identity built on personal connection instead. A clean lesson in why your strengths are not automatically your positioning. (Read)

Why Great Turnarounds Start with Culture, Not Strategy — HBR IdeaCast, with Dan Schulman · Verizon's new CEO inherited five years of share loss and the industry's worst P/E, cut 13,000 roles in month two, and redirected roughly $5bn of OpEx savings back at customers — adding about 650,000 subscribers in a quarter. Brutal, specific, and honest about the cost. (Listen)

02 · Social Media Marketing

The platforms spent this week rewriting who gets reach and who gets paid.

How will Meta's settlement impact social media? — Social Media Today · Meta will pay about $18bn to settle with 29 state attorneys general and accept real product constraints: a two-hour daily cap for teens across Facebook and Instagram, a midnight–6am block, muted notifications during school hours. Under-18s are only ~12% of the base, but the precedent is the story. (Read)

YouTube adds Amazon affiliate links — Social Media Today · Eligible US creators can now tag Amazon products in videos, Shorts and livestreams. YouTube's own July test found product tags drove over 110% more product clicks than description links — worth acting on if you sell anything physical. (Read)

Instagram launches First Draft for Reels — Social Media Today · Select your clips and Instagram cuts the pauses and assembles a rough Reel in one tap, which you can then rearrange or discard entirely. With Reels at roughly half of all time spent in the app, the friction being removed here is the friction that stops most people posting. (Read)

Instagram stresses the importance of captions — Social Media Today · Instagram's own six-point caption guidance, and the reminder buried in it is the useful one: only the first two lines show before "more," and descriptive keywords now feed in-app search. Most brands are still writing captions as an afterthought. (Read)

03 · Self-Help & Personal Development

Three on the mechanics of actually starting, and of playing a longer game.

How to Improve Motivation & Overcome Procrastination — Huberman Lab, with Dr. Masud Husain · Oxford's Masud Husain on the circuitry that weighs effort against reward, and why apathy is a distinct failure mode from laziness. The practical core is activation energy and task subdivision — the thing you already know, explained well enough that you might finally do it. (Watch)

How People Without Formal Power Gain Influence — HBR IdeaCast, with Pamela Meyer · Five routes to indirect influence — influence spotter, backchanneler, precision mover, connector, pulse reader. Directly useful if you are a consultant or coach whose authority is always borrowed rather than granted. (Listen)

Living and Working in the Age of Longevity — HBR IdeaCast, with Lynda Gratton · Gratton's argument: the educate–work–retire structure is finished, and unless you banked 15–20% from the start you should plan to earn into your seventies. She reframes a career as eight threads to weave rather than a ladder to climb — a genuinely different way to think about what you're building. (Listen)

04 · The AI Brief

Where the frontier sits, and two picks on the gap between access and use.

Where the top models stand — week of August 31, 2026: Little movement at the top. Claude Opus 5 still leads the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index around 63, with Claude Fable 5 near 62 and GPT-5.6 Sol and Grok 4.6 clustered around 61. Splits persist by benchmark — GPT-5.6 Sol holds the top verified ARC-AGI-2 score, Opus 5 leads ARC-AGI-3. The practical read is unchanged from last issue: the spread at the top is smaller than the spread between tasks. Choose per job, not per leaderboard.

OpenAI is building AI agents for everything. Will everyone use them? — TechCrunch · The number that should stop you: 98% of OpenAI employees used Codex in June, versus 17% of organisational subscribers and under 1% of individual ones. Roughly 20 million people use the agent apps against more than a billion prompting ChatGPT. Distribution solved, behaviour not. (Read)

AI Costs Are Outpacing Marketing Budgets, So How Do You Strategize? — Marketing AI Institute · Agentic workflows burn tokens across hundreds of steps, and some enterprises have spent an annual AI budget in months; Goldman projects token consumption multiplying 24x by 2030. The advice is sane — audit usage before you restrict access, and match model to task. (Listen)
